Here is Why You Should Be Done With Dinner Well Before Hitting the Bed

It is a practice for most of us to consume our dinner just an hour before hitting the bed. But little did we know this very habit is the main reason behind some of our major health concerns. Science has proven that going to bed immediately after a heavy dinner may result in an uncomfortable night of sleep. The most simple explanation to this is that the body is simultaneously shutting down as well as exerting itself to digest the food. As some of you might’ve experienced this, it leads to discomforts such as gas and indigestion. The other side of the coin is that due to the not-so-comforting experience the previous night, getting going in the morning becomes a bit difficult too.

Scientifically, eating dinner 2-3 hours before bedtime may help you with digestion, reduce heart burn and help you get a good night’s sleep.  Giving 2-3 hours after dinner and before bed allows the body to digest the food. This leads to you waking up in the morning feeling somewhat hungry. It is a good thing, for the fact that you will not be skipping breakfast, which is the most vital meal of the day. Breakfast helps controlling the overall hunger during the day.

When you eat dinner 2-3 hours before dozing off, it allows the stomach to digest the food, which in turn leads you to experience less reflux. Reflux, or heartburn is a sweltering pain in your chest. The pain is often worse when lying down or bending over. Though it is not a cause for alarm, it is never a pleasant experience.

Spacing the dinner and the sleeping time by 2-3 hours can help you to sleep better. Without any parallel activity (here, digestion) going on, the body can go into a complete shut-down mode, preventing body-lag the following morning.

It’s time to inculcate this habit in your everyday life. Over time you’ll notice, you will wake up happier, lighter and feeling ready to take on the day.
